Life's little surprises!

This morning when I woke up, I checked my bank account to make sure I have enough to cover rent, which is coming up in a few days, and I magically find a $56.00 deposit from the Government. Thank you Government, you have now given me a bit of cash to get me by until my EI kicks in, if it ever does....oh and thank you Government, for making me wait over 4 weeks and counting to potentially get EI benefits that I have paid into for 10 years and never claimed....Give me my money, biatch!

I'm losin the game here. I have to add, that about 45 of those jobs I applied for in April, and most of them don't close til May 1st-ish. So there's hope.
I never thought it would be this tough to find a job, I had 4 offers during the first month, when I moved here in August.

In other news, I feel confident saying that the Flames have won their past 2 games, not because I checked the scores, but because the amount of screaming, yelling, honking and woohooing I have heard outside my apartment from the pubs on 17th Ave.

Cop predicts people will 'snap' under new smoking law

PORT HOPE -- A Port Hope man is the second person in Ontario charged under a new law that prohibits smoking in vehicles carrying children.
And while the 20-year-old man was waiting to be issued his ticket after being pulled over yesterday, his 15-year-old female passenger got out of the vehicle and lit up a cigarette.
Port Hope Police Const. Tammie Hartford said she could only watch in frustration as the 15-year-old smoked.
"She was the reason why I pulled the vehicle over," she said. "She was under the age (of 16)."
Under provincial law, it's only illegal to sell or supply cigarettes to anyone under the age of 19, but there's no law prohibiting a person under 19 from smoking.
Hartford noticed the vehicle travelling on Victoria St. N.
There were four people in the vehicle and she said she recognized one as being under the age of 16.
Hartford said she saw the driver smoking and watched him flick the ashes out twice before pulling the car over.
Under the new Smoke-Free Ontario Amendment Act 2008, which came into effect on Jan. 21, smoking is prohibited in a motor vehicle with persons under the age of 16.
The fine, a provincial offence, carries a $125 ticket, plus court costs that drive the total up to $155. If a person fights the fine in court and loses, the fine can jump to $250.
The new rules are part of an effort to protect children from the harmful effects of second-hand smoke.
Two weeks ago, a 53-year-old Kingston man was the first person in the province to be charged.
Officers were stopping vehicles at a roadside spot check in Napanee looking for drunk drivers when they discovered a man smoking with a child in the rear seat.



Although I agree that people shouldn't smoke in the car when a child is present, I don't agree that the government and the police have the right to get involved. This is madness.

A Quiz

I should be working, but god damn it, I don't wanna. Can't make me, cause I do what I want....ya....right, that's why I sit in my stupid cubicle at work monday-friday, 9-5, staring out the window at the mountains and dreaming of being somewhere else, anywhere else. (HELP)

Watching: What am I not watching....my life consists of going to work and watching tv. BUT if you must know, Battlestar Gallactica, Heroes, Flight of the Conchords, the office, 30 Rock, Lost, Ugly Betty, and when they return, Entourage, It's always sunny in philidelphia, Californication, Dexter. God, that's HOW many tv shows? I'm sure there's a couple more that I missed.

Dreading: The rest of February and March, cause I'm on the poor side right now, and it's still cold out....winter=boredom, hibernation & slight depression for me.

Excited about: Summer, 3rd annual girls camping trip and going back to Toronto to see my friends.

Ontario passes private member's bill to outlaw candy-flavoured cigarillos

TORONTO - The Ontario legislature moved Thursday to outlaw the sale of candy-flavoured cigars that politicians said are clearly aimed at getting children hooked on tobacco by giving third and final reading to a private member's bill introduced just over a week ago.

The legislation to ban flavoured cigarillos, which was co-sponsored by Liberal backbencher Dave Levac and New Democrat France Gelinas, was approved in near record time, especially considering that private member's bills rarely become law in Ontario.
Gelinas, who was first elected to the legislature in 2007, said she was thrilled to be able to have an impact on such an important issue so quickly.
"Those are deadly products that were in the hands of our children, and I hope that weighed in the balance," she said after getting government support for the legislation.
"This is my first private member's bill and it will become law. This is phenomenal, and it's certainly a good feeling for me."

Health Promotion Minister Margarett Best said it's clear that tobacco companies are targeting young people by selling cigarillos in 21 flavours, including peach and cherry, for just $1 each in colourful packaging designed to appeal to kids.
"Anything that prevents kids from lighting up in the first place is a good thing," Best said. "And I believe that these cigarillos are indeed something that is very troublesome."
The bill to outlaw flavoured cigarillos and require that non-flavoured cigarillos be sold in packages of 20 passed unanimously in a voice vote Thursday, but is not expected to be proclaimed into law for another few months.

Cigarillos are exempt from anti-smoking regulations because they are wrapped in tobacco leaf, not paper, so are not considered cigarettes. About 80 million of them were sold in Canada in 2006, up from 50,000 in 2001.
Like cigarettes, cigarillos cannot be sold to minors, but until now, there was no restriction on manufacturers adding flavours to the products. Gelinas and Levac said they were able to buy dozens of the cigarillos at stores within two kilometres of the legislature in downtown Toronto.
Government sources said the cigarillo ban is exactly the type of bipartisan co-operation that Premier Dalton McGuinty was hoping for when the government changed the legislature's rules to allow for co-sponsoring of private member's bills.

However, Progressive Conservative Leader John Tory said the bill was intentionally designed by the government to detract attention from Ontario's faltering economy and job losses.
"People are losing their jobs, they're scared to death ... and we're dealing with these kinds of things here that are meant to be sideshows," Tory said.
"Mr. McGuinty brings in one sideshow after another to distract from the fact that he is doing nothing about the economy, nothing to provide any kind of plan on training and jobs."
Anti-smoking advocates, the Ontario Lung Association and the Canadian Cancer Society all expressed support for the ban on flavoured cigarillos.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper promised similar legislation to ban flavouring of cigarillos during this year's election campaign, but nothing was introduced in the brief sitting before Parliament was prorogued Thursday at Harper's request.
